What Coinbase checks
Coinbase sends an SMS code at signup and, by default, at each login. It refuses ranges it classifies as VoIP with a plain error, and it does not offer a voice-call alternative. A real mobile allocation from a trusted country passes; a budget range is a coin toss.
- Identity verification is separate. Documents and a selfie are required to trade. The number has nothing to do with that step.
- Two-factor. Coinbase supports authenticator apps and security keys, and recommends them over SMS.
- Never displayed. The number is a security contact only.
Which line and country to pick
Take a mobile line from the United Kingdom, Germany or Canada. Do not try to save money on the range here.
If Coinbase refuses the number. It is the range classification. Ask for a swap — free within 7 days — to a different carrier block, ideally in another of the countries above.
Step by step
- Pick the line. Choose a mobile line in United Kingdom or another recommended country. The exact price, activation included, is shown before you pay.
- Pay in crypto. Send any of 8 cryptocurrencies to a one-time deposit address. The line is live about a minute after the payment confirms; no e-mail, no document.
- Enter the number in Coinbase. Type the number where Coinbase asks for it and request the code.
- Read the code in the panel. The SMS lands in your inbox with the code extracted and copyable. Developers get it on a webhook.
- Lock the account. Set Authenticator app or security key so the account does not depend on the number alone.

Keeping the account
- Move two-factor to an authenticator app or a security key as soon as the account is open.
- Keep the line while SMS is enabled anywhere on the account.
- Withdrawal allow-listing matters more than the number.
